Chiplun, Ratnagiri:In a shocking incident that raises serious concerns over press freedom and women’s safety, a woman journalist was allegedly attacked by members of the sand mafia in Chiplun taluka of Ratnagiri district while she was reporting on illegal sand mining activities. According to preliminary information, the journalist had reached the riverbank area to document unauthorised sand extraction that has been causing environmental damage in the region. While recording visuals and gathering information, she was reportedly threatened, verbally abused, and physically assaulted by individuals involved in the illegal operation. Her mobile phone was also allegedly damaged during the attack. Local residents rushed to her aid after hearing her cries for help. The journalist later approached the police station and filed a formal complaint, following which a case has been registered against the accused. Police officials have assured strict action and stated that investigations are underway to identify and arrest those responsible. Journalist associations, social activists, and women’s rights groups have strongly condemned the attack, calling it an assault on democracy and freedom of expression. They have demanded immediate protection for journalists reporting on illegal activities and strict enforcement of laws against sand mafia operations. This incident once again highlights the growing threat faced by journalists in rural and semi-urban areas, especially when exposing powerful illegal networks. Citizens and media organizations are urging authorities to ensure justice and prevent such incidents from recurring.
